Practice Emphasis
Mr. Thorp practices civil litigation, with an emphasis on commercial litigation, products liability, insurance coverage and appellate litigation. He has also worked in the areas of bankruptcy, unfair trade practices, and real property litigation. Mr. Thorp is admitted to practice in Oregon, Washington and Alaska, and before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Education
Mr. Thorp received his Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, from Willamette University in 1994. He majored in History with minors in Music and Mathematics. He earned his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Oregon, graduating Order of the Coif. Mr. Thorp also clerked for the Honorable Andrew J. Kleinfield, of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, from 1997 through 1998.
Professional Activities
Mr. Thorp is a member of Defense Research Institute (DRI), the Oregon Association of Defense Counsel (OADC), the Oregon State Bar litigation section and the Multnomah Bar Association. He has served on the Oregon State Bar Association Public Service and Information Committee. Mr. Thorp has been a speaker for continuing legal education courses on insurance coverage and litigation, and has served as a volunteer cooperating attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union.
Representative Cases
- Defended a tire distributor in a multi-million dollar claim arising out of an explosion, fire and resulting loss of an arctic oil drilling rig.
- Representation of automobile, truck and component manufacturers in personal injury, property damage and commercial litigation.
- Representation of manufacturers and sellers of a variety of products, including mobile homes, ski equipment and diving equipment, in product liability cases.
- Commercial litigation and appeals, including antitrust litigation, unfair trade practices claims, and Constitutional claims.
- Representation of insurers and insureds in defense and coverage litigation and appeals.
